Café på Bit Second Tournament results!

Congratulations to Tim Edvardsson for snagging the win in the second tournament of Pixelbot Arena at Café på Bit! He was actually the runner-up at the last tournament that were held there. The runner-up this time was Totte Aspevind.
Tim will be displayed in the main menu tournament winners' list very soon.

I've been working a lot on the game lately, but there's a lot of stuff made that hasn't seen the light of day, yet. Powerups, stages, profiles. Still, an update is just around the corner.

The last few visits to Café på Bit has made me really motivated for Pixelbot Arena. I'm actually going to Awesome Games Done Quick which is in less than a month, and I want to bring the game with me there. So I'll try to squeeze in some more work on the game together with the speedrun practice that I need to do.
But after that AGDQ is over I want to focus solely on Pixelbot Arena. The thoughts about having online multiplayer in this game is coming back to me more and more often.

Let the future of PBA be bright. Play on!

Past tournaments and short update

Congrats to Primal85 for winning the tournament at European Speedster Assembly! It was a blast and I was overjoyed that we could play the finals on the yellow stream. The bracket and all the results is over at challonge.com/pixelbotesa15. You can watch the finals at http://www.twitch.tv/esamarathon2/v/6893806?t=20h39m52s.

Also, congrats to Luddoro for winning the tournament at Cafe på Bit! I am 3 months late to say this, but it was also really fun. I didn't have much info about peoples names/nicknames that attended that time so I only know about the winner. I'll make sure to properly announce the results next time if there's another tournament at Cafe på Bit.

I got a lot of catching up to do. I haven't worked on the game for a while, mostly because of ESA preparation. I got tons of feedback at ESA though. so I shall work on the game again from now on.

Upcoming tournament and patch 0.2.4!

First off, I have something important to announce: There's a tournament at Café på Bit in Skellefteå on Sunday 12th. Be there! The winner will receive a 100 SEK Café på Bit prize card.
Show up early when they open and you'll be able to practice the game for free before the tournament starts! As the creator I won't be in the tournament, of course, but I'll be there!

Also, there's a new patch! I was supposed to release it Friday March 27th, but decided to postpone because of the lack of updates. Then I was supposed to release it Friday April 3rd, but hey -- I'm only a day late.

Next patch I'll try and make no changes to the gameplay, only cosmetic stuff and bugfixes (because of the tournament).
I'm currently working on an announcer to the game, so I'll try and have that ready.
I would love if there were a tutorial too -- not that it's the hardest game to get into, but some might
rather watch a video than get owned by someone until they understand how to play.
I want there to be an in-game tutorial, but I won't have time for that now. I'll see if I can record a YouTube tutorial for now.

Changelog:

- Added a "Match Set" function under Play > Match Set. Set your match sets to first to 3, first to 5 or first to 10.
- "Powerups" configuration has been moved to Play > Game Mode > Powerups. Text has been added in the menu that will say either "Default" or "Custom" depending on your configurations.
- Air Dash is now prioritized in collisions so it always wins (except against Burst).
- Air Dash now consumes ammo when the dash starts, instead of at the start-up animation.
- A grenade that is thrown into a Lightning powerup will now get ignited and do a bigger radius explosion.
- A laser beam that is shot into a Lightning powerup will now make the area electrified for a few seconds which will kill any player.
- A puck that is launched into a Lightning powerup will now start pulsating electric shocks above them that will kill any player.
- The counter that appears when you obtain powerups to tell you how much ammo you have now
appears when you use powerups as well.
- Spamming Burst on the same position now makes the recovery longer.
- Extended the active frames on charge laser so it's a bit harder to jump over.
- If you cancel charge laser you recover much faster now.
- Fixed platforms becoming immune to grenades.
- Fixed being able to shoot laser beam in the air after walking off a platform.
- Fixed charging a grenade throw and then taking Lightning powerup would make you throw a grenade once the electricity is gone.

PBA v0.2.3!

Alright - a lot of work was done in the last week. I wanted to wait a bit before adding more powerups to the game, but I removed one so I felt like I had to restore the balance. Anyhows, here's the changelog:

- Added a new defensive powerup: Air Dash! Press the defensive button and hold your desired direction, and let go
of the button and dash.
- You can now turn around when jumping or falling.
- Grenades will not be destroyed if they touch a powerup, but the powerup will still be destroyed.
- You can now cancel a grenade throw if you let go of the Offensive button when you duck.
- Removed Invisibility powerup from the game. It was just too gimmicky and everyone felt it wasn't a fun powerup to obtain.
It might return if this game will have online multiplayer one day, we'll see (because then you would be fully visible on your own screen).
- Added an option to enable or disable specific powerups in Play > Powerups.
- Added resolution and window options in Options > Video. Includes an options to reduce effects in the game.
- Added some cosmetic effects to the Puck.
- Added some cosmetic effect to Lightning state.
- Fixed weapons like mines, grenades and pucks getting destroyed if they are too far above the screen.
- Fixed mines falling through players and not killing them.
- Fixed not being able to grab ladders after a superjump.
- Fixed being able to sometimes shoot laser in the air.
- Fixed gaining recovery from the Burst faster than you're supposed to if you did many in a row.
- Fixed a rare bug where you could climb through platforms if a ladder ended and it was another ladder on the
platform above it.
- Fixed the laser recoil pushing you out of the screen.

Pixelbot Arena v0.2.2

Next patch! v0.2.2! Changelog:

- Added "Quit" to Main Menu
- Added "Grid Respawning" -- if you press "Defensive Powerup"-button when the cross-hair is out,
you can choose your spawning spot with a different cross-hair that will position your character so you can crouch instantly upon respawn. It's mostly meant for ducking under lasers upon respawn, but there are a few other applications like insta-slide, etc.
- Made respawning a lot quicker
- Made the respawning crosshairs start to blink when the time's up
- Modified the looks of the powerups to make them more recognizeable
- Added a 2 sedond grace period when respawning if you play on Beginner Mode (exception is bottom of the screen)
- Added more buffer-opportunities; mostly just holding jump and being able to jump after laser shot, mine placing, grenade throw, etc
- Prettied up the shockwave effect after exploding grenades
- Prettied up the respawning effect
- Fixed mines so they only kill if you step on them

Pixelbot Arena v0.2.1

Pixelbot Arena is a 2-player arena game, heavily inspired by the DOS game Marshmallow Duel. It's currently in alpha stage.
I don't have any gameplay videos yet, but I'll add some screenshots to this post.

I feel like I should've done this at least a year ago -- but here it is: Pixelbot Arena v0.2.1!

From the readme: there is no "quit" option in the Main Menu in this build, so close the game with ESC.
